I would think that you could tell if it is the u-joint or not by spinning
the tire a few times and noting where the binding occurs.  If it is on the
same spot on the tire every time then it is not the u-joint, I would suspect
the ring gear maybe.  If it happens at various places on the tire as you
spin then it maybe the u-joint.
