Hi, I removed it while updating the examples to recent technologies (GTK+ 3, for example). The code sample was very outdated. The new Gnome user interface does no longer support panel applets and the sample used Bonobo, which has been deprecated in favor of D-Bus for a long time. It wouldn't even have worked with Gnome's fallback mode.
