Jaffna is the corruption of the word Yaalpaanam. So is Trincomalaee
(Thirukonamalai) and Batticaloa (Maddakkalappu).

Most words in Thamil have a meaning. In fact Tholkaapiyar in his grammar
treatise Tholkaapiyam says all words have an inherent meaning. For example we
call paravai after its verb form
"paraththal." Later in time we lost the ability to decipher the meaning of
some words. For example the word "maram" (Tree.)

India words corrupted by the English invaders are now being restored to their
original form. Example Bombay is now Mumbai, Calcutta is now Kolkatta and
Madras is now Chennai. It is time Thamils too change Jaffna, Trincomalee,
Batticaloa etc to their original form.
