The Dutch place names in Sri Lanka including the Islet names mentined
as well as place names in Western Province such as Bloomfontein,
Bloomenthal are product of Dutch colonialism during the VOC days.
These places had native names and most people especially in the North
still use the native names (in every day conversation and official
documentation) not the Dutch names.

Naming of Colombo manifests from from a Portugese attempt at
westernaizing a native name for the port that existed long before
their arrival in 1505 ACE. Originally it was known as Kolon-Totta and
Portugese connected it with the Portugese derivation of Columbus's
Italian name. The name struck.

Jaffna is an English version various derivations from the ultimate
root Yalpanam in Tamil. It sounds closer to the Sinhalese translation
of Yalapanam, Yapanaya than Yalpanam itself. It is not unusual as the
British colonials were firmly estblished in Colombo before Jaffna. I
have not researched the Portugese and Dutch names for this important
city. That might give better clues as to how the English ended up
with Jaffna as its name.

Because the English name for Sri Lanka namely Ceylon has an
interesting etymology. It is derived from a Dutch derivation that was
derived from a Portugese derivation that was derived from an Arbic
derivation.....:-)))
