I see what you're saying, but I don't think that's going to work for 
shogi. In shogi the 'color' of the piece is represented by which 
direction the piece points (shogi pieces are wedge shaped that point 
away from their player). So what I need is starting side & promoted side 
pointing in one direction for 'black' and another set pointing in the 
other direction for 'white'. Also, the symbols on the 
promoted/unpromoted sides of the pieces are completely different from 
each other. So there's nothing to really overlay onto anything else, and 
each state has it's own graphic.

What I had hoped to do with the 'restricted access' method I was going 
for was to create two sets of pieces (one for each player) hoping that 
during the game the pieces could change owners and just be rotated 180 
degrees.

I'll have to give how I'm going about this some more thought and see 
what I can come up with. Thanks for your suggestions. :)

PS - I noticed in the Files section that someone started a module for 
Tori Shogi and uploaded it. Good job on the graphics :) I'm gonna study 
how they were going about setting up their pieces.
