You usually expect .log files to be text files and many people will have these 
setup to auto-open with a text editor. Similiarly, .mod files are usually 
expected to be music files.

I would prefer to rename the lot, and I don't believe there is any reason at 
all to keep to a n.3 format file name.

Module: .vmod or .vmd
Extenstion: .vmdx or .vmx
Plugin: .vplug or .vpg
Log/save: .vdata or .vdt

But, it doesn't really matter as long as something is decided as standard, even 
if it ends up being .mod, .mdx, .pgi, .sav and .dat
