Thanks Tim!

I resolved the issue in the end by downloading the latest version of Java for 
Mac OSX as 
you suggest, but it would only work with OSX10.4.8 or above. I only had 10.4.4 
so I then 
had to download the latest OSX update. Always wary about doing that, but I did, 
and 
everything seems fine so far (fingers crossed!).

Don't worry, I won't hold you responsible if 10.4.11 wipes my hard drive :D
