Thanks, I got it working.  For the record:

1. 
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18859&lang=eng 
shows 2 drivers: iata96cd.exe and iata96enu.exe.  No clues given on the site as
to which does what.  I tried installing iata96enu.exe.

2. iata96enu.exe also complained that I need .net > 3.0, but this time ignoring 
the warning, the driver appeared to install OK (the one I tried yesterday 
refused to install).

3. shutting down, I used the vb gui to detach the .vdi from the IDE and attach 
to the SATA.  Minor panic because on 'add disk' it did not show the .vdi I just 
removed, and I had to search around different dirs to find it.  Probably 
because 
this installation has been around for quite a few VB versions and things may 
have moved around.
