ok, i'm going to take pablo's advice, explain what i'm trying to do,
what i did, and am prepared to take abuse for doing it incorrectly.
(it's embarrassing to have to ask these questions as i was getting
into vbox not that long ago, then got dragged away. grrrrr.)

i'm teaching a basic course in linux device drivers next week so,
for better or worse, i'm doing it on a ubuntu VM, prepared to run into
the occasional glitch because it's being done in a VM.

anyway, on my end, i installed vbox 4.0.6 on my 64-bit ubuntu 10.04
system and, because i had no idea what the arch of the eventual
teaching was, i downloaded the 32-bit DVD of ubuntu 11.04 (natty
narwhal) and installed a fairly generic system, then loaded it up with
some kernel stuff, created a generic student account, tested a single
loadable module (which appeared to load properly), then shut it down.

at that point, i exported the appliance and got a 4G "natty32.ova"
file, for which my plan is to copy that to a DVD for each student.
i've already told the people at the other end to install vbox 4.0.6 on
what i just learned is a set of 64-bit windows 7 systems, so that's
being taken care of as we speak.

in the end, my plan is to show up that first morning with the
natty32.ova file on enough DVDs to give one to each student, they can
import that into vbox on their windows systems, and we're off and
running. so far, so good?

and now, the questions. first, i should probably have installed the
guest additions in my VM before exporting. am i correct in assuming
that the guest additions install would be reflected in the exported
.ova file?

also, what is the proper protocol for the students loading that VM i
hand them? pablo mentions using VBoxManage to change all their UUIDs.
i just want to make sure i do all this correctly as i really don't
want nasty surprises on the first day of class.

  thanks for any assistance.
