Web-based Forums are easier for trolls to work on... and for competitors to create mayhem. Mailing lists, on the other hand, are more of a "community" and if a troublemaker arrives, he can be easily kicked off. I never liked Sun's decision to put emphasis on web forums instead of a traditional mailing list, and that's why this list was born. FC
