Don't tell your vm about your keyboard and mouse at all. Even if they are usb devices. Your vm will SHARE your kbd/mouse signals with other running apps on the host as you would expect. Your vm will open in a window on your host, and you can click on and off this window as normal to move to other apps. The only usb devices you need to control with the guest are those that need exclusive access from the guest, like a usb hd or scanner.
