Essentially 'hardware virtualization' uses features of recent processors that are specifically designed for virtualization. You'll often see these features called VT-x, for Intel Processors or AMD-V for AMD processors. 'Software Virtualization' essentially performs the same task but without using those special features. However, this has the down side of poorer performance and lower compatibility because certain aspects of virtualization cannot be easily achieved or are almost impossible to do entirely in software.
