Apparently, some of this issue went away when I removed the original VM from
which this machine had been cloned as I am now able to use the floppy drive
properly.

Subject: [VBox-users] floppy controller attachments
I am having a problem with using floppy controllers on a VM. After I connect
the controller with a VM and then open the Settings dialogue and hover my
mouse over the floppy device, or select it with the cursor, it indicates
that this device is attached to some other IDE image file, either one
associated with this same VM or one that is altogether separately associated
with a different VM. This happens consistently and whenever I create the
device so that it should run from the host device. In other words, I never
made the association it now shows to have. This problem seems to prevent me
from using the actual host floppy device for any purpose. Any ideas about
that?
