Sorry if you think we were not active enough on that thread at the time. The fact that Valdis and Dave in particular answered your question well enough that we didn't feel the need to add anything was an important reason, along with the fact of course that we did not feel like getting dragged into a long discussion that would probably not have led anywhere. I hope you will not mind if I try to pre-empt that discussion now: the short facts are that we still do not want to invest the time to set up a stable ABI, nor to completely rewrite our internals (which are shared on four different host operating systems, each with a large body of host-specific supporting code) to satisfy Greg's requirements, which we understand and respect. Those are two separate issues of course. Without even going into the small matter of whether the Linux kernel actually wants part of a user application living in its source code. Does that answer your question, even if you may disagree with the priorities behind our decision?
