Rance,

  You were right. The vboxsf module was compiled, but for some reason after
one of the recent updates leading to 5.2.30 the auto-mount shared folders
checkbox was cleared. Since I never actually open virtualbox when starting a
guest (I start all VMs via ssh with VBoxManage startvm <name> --type
headless), it caused me fits in trying to figure out where the problem was and
why vboxadd.service wasn't carrying out the automount. Thank you. Problem 
solved.

  Now I just have to figure out how to handle openSuSE Leap 15.1 installing
the 6.0.6 guest packages which are causing errors connecting to my 5.2.30 
host....
