I'm trying to get XP home working as a guest with the guest additions
with 1.3.6 running on top of Kubuntu Edgy.

I can install XP Home and SP2 fine. Without the guest
additions, Windows uses a standard svga driver that is able
to display 800x600 and 1024x768, which it does.

I can also install guest additions, and it boots, and they
are working, as far as sound and mouse pointer and the like
are concerned.

However, if I go into the display settings, it shows the
"(Default Monitor) on Virtualbox Graphics Adapter" as expected.

However, it shows it as being 640x480 pixels (even though the
display is actually at 800x600 or 1024x768) and 16 bit colour.

It works in this mode, but the moment I take any effort to change
the resolution to anything else (even the actual resolution of
the screen) we get odd failures. The wallpaper paints but nothing
else. Sometimes things are painted as though you have bad memory
(repeated copies with half the scan lines missing etc., you have
all seen a bad video driver.)

After this, it will boot but displays black or just the wallpaper.
It does not resize. It is unusable. You can't shut it down except
by "hard" poweroff.

You can boot in safe mode and remove the driver and it still does
not work properly on normal mode reboot. The only way out is to
revert to snapshot or complete reinstall.

I am using the standard XP Pro+Home ISO from MSDN Universal, no
service pack initially.

I did specify 16mb for the video graphics memory. Is there a way
to decrease this and not have the VM barf because the signature
changed?

Note I have gotten Win2K to run just fine with guest additions on this
system. The XP has also crashed at some odd times so I wonder if it
is less stable.
