I'm not a networking guru, so anyone can feel free to correct me.
Roughly speaking, a bridge joins two networks together, making hosts on
both sides of the bridge believe they're on the same network. In this case,
the two networks are (1) your existing home network (including your VB host
machine) and (2) your VB host and guest systems. Once you've configured
your host OS to bridge the two networks, you can play with the guest OS as
if it's a separate box plugged into your router/switch/hub.
On the other hand, if you use NAT, the host OS will hide the guest OS from
your network, performing any communications on its behalf. This works fine
for most internet activities, but I don't *think* you'll be able to join a
Windows network that way.
I'm guessing you're using the NAT option? If you have internet
connectivity, I'm not really sure why you can't ping the other hosts on the
network. This is probably a silly question, but are pings being blocked by
the other hosts' firewalls? I.e. can you ping them from the host OS either?

I believe so.

Not I, sorry. I'm the other way around. I run Linux as my host now and only
fire up my Windows VM for a few functions when necessary.
