I don't know if this will help, but I'm finding that on a winXP guest ona linux host, when the guest is started is says it has a network connection, but it lies, you can't ping anything or connect to anything, but its sits happily saying it has a 10 MB connection to the host.
If you disable the interface , and then re-enable it it functions as it should do, I'm not using NAT as I prefer to use a proper firewall on the linux host.
