The error you mention here is related with the incorrect (2.1.4) Bridged Networking Driver being used with 2.2 due to some kind of 2.2 update failure.

Try doing the following:
1. Uninstall VBox
2. Open properties dialog for one of your network connections (the one used for
Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
ir preferable) -> in case there is a "VirtualBox [Host,Bridged] Interface Networking Driver" entry there - select it and click the "Uninstall" button
3. After that you should be able to install the VBox 2.2 and use bridged networking without any problem

Advanced User - my next Step would be the Regedit :-)

1) I picked it all out of the Registry.
2) reboot
3) Reinstall 2.2
4) reboot
5) Exportet Virtual Machine, worked, AFAIS
6) Started Virtual Machine with (Default:Bridged) Networking
It is a Win98 on WinXP Host SP2
