By defition, managing a vmdk or vdi is the same as managing
physical disks - they can't grow. The way to expand is to
buy a new disk (create a bigger image), and use the tools
available to the host or guest OS to transfer the contents
to the bigger disk.
There is an unsupported workaround though: Create a new,
bigger vdi and use
VBoxManage clonehd --existing
to copy the old vdi into the new.
I don't know if it will work for .vmdk format images.
The extra space will be visible as unpartitioned space.
It only works in some conditions (can't clone a < 4GB image
to a >4GB image, for example), so use at your own peril, and
keep a good backup of the original image.
