it should be possible.
It might be a bit dangerous to combine it with the resizing
operation, so you may want to convert / resize in two steps.
You can mix and match the conversion and resizing without any trouble.
The only reason why resizing isn't supported is that it doesn't handle
the CHS geometry for disks smaller than approx. 4GB correctly yet.
I ended up with a VMDK when I exported and re-imported a machine. The
original machine had a VDI, but the imported has a VMDK.
