Host-only networking is one of the major reasons I am using VirtualBox. I tried to use VB a while back and, because the feature was not there, I went back to Parallels for a while. But I would really like to use VB. I am on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 system, using Virtual Box version 3.1.0 r55467, and am trying to use Ubuntu 9.10 as the guest.

I went to the Virtual Box application, selected my (non-running) VM, hit the "Network" header and switched the VM to use host-only networking. Then I started my VM. I had hoped I could do "ssh vboxnet0" from my host machine to connect to the guest, but this does not work. I have openssh-server installed on the guest.

Are there docs more specific to the host and the guest that I am not finding? I am looking at the manual and, for instance, it says things like

In the VirtualBox graphical user interface, you can configure all these items in the global settings via “File” -> “Settings” -> “Network”, which lists all host-only
networks which are presently in use.

In the application I have, that menu does not exist. I see "File" -> "Virtual Media Manager...", "File" -> "Import Appliance..." and "File" -> "Export Appliance..." and that is all. It makes me wonder if I even have the right manual.

I am probably missing something obvious. So what is it?

thanx - ray
