The whole point of virtualization is that the host shouldn't matter - in theory, you should be fine - does your processor support hardware virtualization, like VT or AMD-V? Is it enabled? 32 or 64 bit guest on
32 or 64 bit host?

I think I remember Vista's EULA expressly disallowing use in a virtual machine unless you bought the Business, Enterprise or Ultimate editions, so that may be your problem.

I did, previously, install Windows 7 Professional in
VirtualBox on an
XP Pro host, if it helps...

I went and bought Windows 7. It's an iso downloaded from
digital river.
I've tried to install it on a vm under 3.1.2 and Fedora
12. All goes
well until I put in the activation code, which is
invalid. After 7
tries I'm left with two theories:

1. MS screwed me. The activation code is bad.

2. Win 7 won't install in vbox on a linux host.

Has anybody installed W7 on a linux host?
Well this is Win 7 Pro. Can I install it on an XP host, and
then move
the vm to linux?

Yes should not matter
In general, can you create a vm on Windows and run it on linux, and vice versa?

I do this all the time, also I have windows 7 32/64bit running under linux
ubuntu 9.10

Did you _install_ it on the ubuntu host? Or move it from a windows host?

In other words, should I complain to Digital River about the activation code?
