Even if you did update the inventory, if the tape has not been expired (images no longer valid) Netbackup will know about the data and not overwrite the tape.
The only issue would be if you had a tape that had already expired, which you put into the library to restore from. You would have to do an import on the tape before you could restore from it, so in the timeframe between injecting the tape in the library, and doing the import, there is a small window during which Netbackup could overwrite the tape, assuming you did not write protect or freeze the cart. Sounds like a TSM zealot spreading FUD about NBU.
