Patrick G4 sounds fine - based on the clients you have, alot will also depend if you are going to add any additional Media Servers to drive any additional drives in the library. Also LAN based clients will depend on the backbone too.
I know of a client that is running 10 LTO4 drives with a very similar spec box (but dual processor), most run over the LAN and performance has been acceptable. Obviously, good planning is needed :) Their images folder is around 40GB+ I believe. I would add more RAM if possible. What I would do (if poss) is add additional disks to relocate the catalog data file(s) (Images) to help retain speed (well some speed increase). Anyhow, thats my view. Add an additional processor to help boost the system. If poss, add Media Server for large backup systems. That should help take the load off the Master. My real concern is the horsepower of the box in relation to doing all the task and writting to 8 SSO LTO 3 drives. The amount of data is about 30TB for full backups and most of the windows boxes are file & print or exchange and some SQL. The UNIX boxes are Oracle. Does this help? As to the Linux comment, I would love to, but it's not up to me. If it were up to me it would be a Solaris box. :) Regards, Patrick -------------------------------------------------------------------- You failed to menton how many clients and how much you plan on backing up, that is probably the most important thing, then media servers, then master server.
