Whoa, it works! By default it seems be really transparent which means it's quite slow; according to vsar the move speed was around 70MB/s, about one third of the maximum. This is no problem though; I can leave the data moving for a few days if necessary. It's more important to have the data online 24/7.
I'll definitely use the 'vxassist move + vxresize' method instead.
