A rope-dubbed hackle, maybe on GSP or mono (not that you need them over any
other type of thread, but I just prefer to use the stronger things... call
me paranoid...) is a great caterpillar fly. I can't speak for what size
works for trout and bass, but the crappie and sunnies/panfish go for
smaller than 12, usually 16s, with hackle appropriately sized. I prefer
using silver badger, golden badger, and/or furnace hackles, for the
different color towards the hook shank when wrapped, versus more "flat
toned" one color hackles. Personal preference, I don't know if it makes a
lick of difference with catching more or less fish. Cree is great but my
supply of that is limited, as is speckled champagne and "speckled pardo
CDL-like" hackle. Just my 2 cents worth :)
Back to taking care of our 2 month old,
-Pete
