Not sure about the green weenie imitating a caterpillar .  Usually they're tied
either with lead wrapped around the shank or a black beadhead and meant to
imitate the green rock worm or similar caddis larvae.  The green inch worm is
usally tied with a piece of foam. The small foam cylinders used for parachute
posts work well for tying them.  There is a black caterpillar that clutters up
the trees with their silk nests.  I spent about 15 minutes breaking up one that
was hanging over the Upper Delaware near Hancock.  I watched them float
downstream till they disappeared without anything rising for them.  There was a
slightly larger and hairy caterpillar that were dropping off a bridge over one
of the Catskill streams near Roscoe  which the trout were taking with
enthusiasm.  I had some black foam back at camp.  I cut into strips and wrapped
it on size 8 3xl hook, and then wrapped brown hackle.  If I flipped the fly up
into the air and let it plop in to the water, I caught fish.  If I cast
upstream and let drift over where the trout were feeding there were no takers.
It also worked well in lakes in a smaller size for sunfish, rock bass and the
stray smallmouth when  cast under trees hanging over the water.

I don't know so much as about warm water, but along at least the East Coast
trout streams that I am aware of we have vast numbers of tiny green
caterpillars that are active right now and up through the next few more weeks.
They cover the trees as the leaves first unfold in the spring when they are the
most tender and nutrient dense. They are often seen dangling like a spider from
a tiny thread of silk. If you park under a tree it will become immediately
clear just how prolific they are. Trout love them, and the most popular pattern
out here is called the green weenie. On streams with tight canopies it is worth
trying this pattern first from early spring right up until early summer.

For you guys who live in the south and in other warm-water areas.
How well do caterpillar flies work?  Are the soft worm-like ones the best, or
the fuzzy ones?
I don't see too many caterpillars for sale in shops.
