I'm late in on this and hopping things are looking better.

Also, we have in NH what we call NH Healthy Access, it's through hospitals. Basically, its a form of insurance for patients who don't have any, based on need, you can be working and qualify. But for a emergency it can pick up most of the cost. Most of our patients who qualify are working poor so can't get medicaid, but can't afford insurance.

this is grant funded, and should be available everywhere, but goes by state. I hope you can find something like this and things improve!

this morning in severe pain, and couldn’t get a deep breath, we
didn’t worry about driving to the ER, but called 911 and got her
there in an Ambulance. She is feeling a little better tonight.
She has a great doc who even though we may not see her but once
a day, keeps in touch with the nurses station all the time,
cause she put my wife on new meds all day, as well as ordering
new X-Rays, blood tests etc. My wife has been coughing up
little specks of blood and that scared me to death, but they are
telling us that that is a GOOD sign because it needs to get all
that out of her lungs, which is why her doc started ordering
breathing treatments 2-3 times a day now. To get that stuff
coughed up, and to ward off pneumonia even though it hurts
really bad to cough. And the nurse my wife has tonight just got
over this SAME thing herself and in fact, JUST came back to
work a week or two ago, and she said that YES. it hurts BADDDDD.
And she said that too, that it has been a long road to total
recovery. I’m just glad she had a doc and nurses who are caring,
and take time to explain what’s going on, and just seem to
genuinely care in general. Thanks a LOT for all the info. Many
ppl don’t want to hear all the ‘gory details” but we are just
the opposite. We like to know what we might expect both good
        and/or bad. Thanks again, Chuck

I forgot to mention, with regard to the pain. You will get an
idea of what hypoxic pain is like, for that is what the pain
from blood clots is, pain that blocks oxygen to areas of the
lungs, if you will tie a string tightly around your finger and
see how painful it is as your finger turns blue. Interestingly,
one of the methods of torture during the inquisition was to
place tourniquets on the limbs and watch the victim suffer. When
we know that we will have to use a tourniquet on a limb for
foot surgery, we place the patient under general anesthesia
because hypoxic pain is very severe. Even under an anesthetic,
after about 1/2 hour with the tourniquet, the blood pressure
begins to rise and Fentanyl, our most reliable and potent
adjunct, doesn't really control the response after 1-2 hours.
So yes, the pain is severe, but she must note whether the pain
areas or quality of pain changes as well..in short, does she
have sudden increase in, or a much more intense pain or a new
area that suddenly or even gradually becomes more painful. Hope
this helps and prayers continue. Recovery is very possible, but
        long and painful. Joyce

themselves. Watch her carefully, however. If she suddenly
has a marked increase in pain or shortness of breath, get
her to the ER right away as sometimes a clot can move and
block a new and more important area of the lung or heart.
Having said that, and not to scare you, but our
anesthesiologist simply bumped his shin on a bed at home, a
small bruise, he thought *(and remember, he's an MD) . He
ended up with full blown septecemia after a pneumonia,
respiratory distress syndrome, then into total organ shut
down, dialysis to try and save his kidneys and ICU intubated
for a week, in ICU, then Intermediate care for another two
weeks and it has taken him six months to even begin to feel
better. Incredibly, he did survive, thanks to modern
medicine and great doctors. So, as previously stated, watch
her carefully and if you have any concerns, don't be afraid
to go back to the ER and demand they take another look. She
should have another followup X-ray in about 2 weeks. Joyce

that the blood clot(s) had evidently not completely
dissolved and passed from the other day. She had told us
outright the other day that since my wife’s new to her
job and has no insurance, that she was sending her home
a day or two earlier than had she had good insurance.
Ain’t that how it goes??? Anyway, to quote my wife this
morning “This is more painful than having a baby”. And
it’s going to get worse before it gets better according
to the doc because they are having to give her breathing
treatments, to ward off pneumonia, because she tries to
hold back the coughing and deep breathing because it
hurts a lot worse to breath deeply or to cough. But, the
doc says that she MUST cough to get the lungs clear both
of the clots and to stop pneumonia. They now have her
                in dilaudid (sp) for pain.

                 > Now, my question for everybody is this. Or at least
to anybody who may have ever had a blood clot in their
lungs. Are blood clots REALLY that painful??? I mean, I
know they are, cause my wife has a high threshold for
pain, but is the doc being totally honest in that THAT
is what is causing THAT much pain??? The doc says that
THAT much severe pain is “normal” in having and/or
getting rid of blood clots. Is the doc being totally
honest??? If so, how long should the pain last from the
onset of treatment??? I know everybody is different, and
the number, size, and location of the clots all play
into it, but this has me worried that the doc isn’t
being totally honest about this??? Thanks for ANY
                answers in advance. Chuck
