Chuck, I have seen both good and bad results from these units. Usually, the
first thing pain management people do is inject some local anesthetic in
the area that they feel is causing the problem with your pain. If this
local works, then they find that a tens unit in this area will usually work
well.  The most important thing is to identify, precisely, where the pain
is being generated in your spine. If this is done, these work well. The
implanted device can only provide relief if it is in the area from which
the pain is arising. Sometimes, it is found, that just injecting local in
the area can quiet the pain and in this  case, local with steroid
injection, will be all that is needed and the tens unit won't be inserted.
You have great doctors, especially that you have both the neurologist and
the orthopedic man and the pain management doctor working together. This is
