Good to hear that there is really no difference in effectiveness of the hooks (using different extension angles) when you suspending the pattern below and indicator. Here's a sample of a balanced version of one of my flies Bastardo Bugger as tied by a friend. I think what I need to do to improve hooking qualities are to move the angled hookeye as far forward as possible, use at least a tungsten bead, and also to use a wider gape hook, like Neville suggested. These balanced patterns are definitely not my favorite way to tie, but they do merit a place in the flybox. At least *until further notice*.
