Hi Dennis,
I just picked up some of that thin skin on my last foray into the fly
shop. I'll have to give that a try - it certainly is a good looking
material.
Your comments remind me of a fly that I used on my first flyfishing
trips (I fish because my granddad taught me) at the age of 12. It was a
little caddis fly like an Elk Hair Caddis but it had the wing tied down
in back (Tied-Down Caddis). Anyway, my first trip to a lake environment
found me lacking what I thought were the proper stillwater flies to use,
as I had a limited selection in those days. I brought out one of these
"caddis" flies and Gramps had me fish it to match the scuds in the
lake. It was eye-opening to say the least. I learned that it only
mattered what the fish thought of the fly, not what I thought it was!
Here it is 25 years later and I still have to remind myself of that
important fact at times.
