Sometimes - especially when the water is not so clear, I like to use similar bugs. I guess that the fish hear the 'plopp' when the bug falls into the water and get notice of it this way.
Probably one of the reasons why Dave's hopper, Irresistable and similar flies are sometimes so catchy.

That is not unlike the "BUG" we use around here.  It is deerhair tied on a #10 dry hook white/black/yellow/black/white.  For some reason, the trout go crazy over it sometimes.  No hackle and trimmed in an ovoid shape.  Wonderbread...er...Byard probably needs one for the VFB so remind me to send him one.  ;-)
