Eddie, Deb raises an important point. Heating the hook up has the risk of softening the metal, which is called 'annealing'. This is likely to happen if the hook is in the flame more than a few seconds. The electric pens have much less risk of doing this because they cut through the material without generally heating the entire hook.
Also, when you use a knife or razor blade to remove material, you're going to scrape lacquer off the hook, making it more likely to rust. It's a good idea to seal the scraped hook with nail polish or head cement where the brown lacquer has been removed.
