Tie the mono along the shank and around the bend of the hook. Leave it sticking down from the back of the hook while you tie the fly. Don't wind the thread head yet. Leave the thread attached. When done, bring the mono up to and through the eye. Pull the end through the eye till the bottom portion conforms to your best idea of a where a weedguard should be. Now bend the part sticking through the eye back towards the rear of the fly, and wrap over both sections of the mono, pulling it up to the shank both above and below the hook. Finally build the head, tie off in the normal way, and cement it. You can use Krazy Glue or Zap-a-Gap or Bondini orsomething like that for cement for added gripping power.
