John,

30# hard nylon will work fine.  I tie my mono in at the tail very early in the flytying process, then when the fly is finished bend it around to the desired shape and tie it in at the head and trim the  extra length off.  Then apply some additional turns of thread to make the head smoother.  Hope this helps.

Hello VFB
I've been tying up salt water flies for a trip to Fla. in March/April. Many
of the patterns call for or should have weed guards. I've got some 30# mono
to tie the weed guards but don't really know how to go about it. Bend the
mono by crimping it? heat it? bend it w/ wraps? when to tie it in? epoxy to
hold it in place? I figured I'd stick w/ the mono weed guards for now rather
than try to learn to many techniques. Any help, suggestions or sites w/
demos would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
John
