Deputy Sheriff - Game Warden. Six of one half a dozen of the other.! :-P
Well, maybe in Texas, but not necessarily everywhere. Game Wardens in Indiana are all quite professional. It's pretty tough to get selected for the Conservation Officer training program.
The majority of deputies in Indiana are now professionally trained - all new ones are required to undergo training within the first 2 years of their employment. But there are still a few old-time "Buford the Sheriff" types on the road in some of the outlying counties. And there are still some young and cocky or young and lazy types that never make it to training (nor do they last two years).
And the sheriffs themselves are elected politicos. 'Nuff said.
