I have been fishing for quite a few years now and have learned some tricks to fighting fish. Such as when to apply more pressure and when not. However when I lose a nice fish, I always ask myself, what could I have done different to keep that fish on. I usually fish with a 3 weight rod for trout that can reach up to 6 lbs or bigger. However I also do some steelhead, pike and salmon fishing with a 9 weight when I get the chance. The pike get up to and sometimes over 20 lbs and the steelhead and salmon are the same.

When you submerge the line in the water, what do you consider a strong tippet? I have lost fish before because they go deep, get lots of line under the water and then run off somewhere, only to break the tip. I have learned to keep the fish shallow if possible but how strong of tippet are we talking about?
