Pete: Regarding the Light Cahill wings, for a long time I have used an elk hair
post as the wing. I choose the shade desired, and tie it in. Depending on how
dark or light you want the wing, you can select whatever coloring of hair to
use. It is also relatively easy to determine the length of the wing.
Sometimes I split it and figure-8 it, and sometimes I leave it as a single
post/wing. The fish don't seem to mind, but the elk hair is much easier to
handle (IMHO) and probably improves the "floatablilty" of the fly.

Hi everyone,
I was tying up a batch of Catskill flies and wanted to know... in the Light
Cahill pattern, it was my understanding that the mallard-flank wing was split
and figured-8ed. However, a friend of mine recently showed me his, and the
mallard-flank is tied in a pseudo-parachute/ clump fashion (without splitting
the wing clump, but not wrapped around the base as for a parachute, nor
figure-8ed). Now I'm sure the trout don't mind much (he's caught #s on it),
but my curiousity has me asking:

What was the original recipie? and
What benefit might one pose over the other?

Just curious for your input. Tight wraps,
Pete
