AL is only one of a cpl states where ppl have caught 4# blue gills.. I am looking for my first 2#er, Biggest I ever caught was a beautiful (though jet black after he was out of the water) male, in the Delta, AL state lakes, and it weighed 1# 3oz.... It was on a 10ft cane pole, with live redworm, 4# test line, and I thought I had hung up on the bottom...I'd hate to see what a 3-4 pounder would do, cause Blue Gills like that are like pulling hub caps through the water cause of their oval shape, and when they turn sideways, Oh man, what a fight... Oz per pound, one of the best fighters in the water IMHO, and I lived in FL 17 yrs and that includes salt and freshwater fish in my experience... I don't have the patience to bass fish, and there are no trout in my area to speak of.... Example, here in SC. Check with your local warden first.     On a side note to the same topic: If you would like and don't mind waiting, once I get caught I could send you a few of my brim flies. I'll send you a few of the soft hackles that Jeff was talking about and a few creations that only I tie that are real killers here.                                                                                           Del PS....
