Same here.. I came here I think a little over a yr ago at the invite of Jimmy D, (ya'll go easy on Jimmy for ever inviting me here LOL) and it has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me..I was on another list (Can't even remember the name), but they did NOT act like they wanted to answer a newbie like mine's million questions, and I know that I am part of the stray banter at times, and apologize for that. I suffer from chronic depression and this group has been better than any med i have ever taken I can tell ya that. And ppl put up wit me asking questions that I know must have been asked a thousand times already. ppl have sent me materials, videos, information, you name it.. Much that I could never have afforded on my income, and I now have a hobby because of this list that is the most relaxing thing I have ever done in fly tying..I get on the vise, and forget bills coming in, forget the ills of the world.. Everything.. Just relax and have fun.. But, I'd have just ordered a starter kit on the other list and given up, but not here. It has made me want to tie, and I have tied more flies than I can fish in ten years. I go to a local park here and there are some kids there and I give them flies, and it makes their day, and that makes My day..Anyway, I appreciate everything everybody has done for me here more than anybody will ever know...And, one of my "life goals" is to go to, say, Sowbug, to meet ppl I have met here in person, but even if I never do get to go to any show, i have met ppl here that I consider best friends just as much as my best friends that live here right down the road or next door, Chuck

Subject: Re: [VFB] A List Gone Bad...Was...Who is (or was) the greatest fly tier ever???

Byard -

I migrated to the list a little over a year ago.  Like many, I sometimes find the banter to be distracting from what I want to get from my association with the list.  But, like Tony, I have met many of the members, through Sowbug, and would not have had the delightful opportunity to get to know Murf - a wonderful tyer and friend - whom we all now miss since his untimely passing a few months ago.

The list may have its problems, but I have not found anything better, or even close to being as good, anywhere out on the net.  Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.  The VFB has something to offer to all of us, and that is whatever we are willing to put into it.  Let's try to keep on topic, but let's also try to not loose the family that we have formed.

I used to be quite proud of this VFB mail list. What happened?

Today a post was made...a good post... it attempted solicitation of
comments and thoughts that actually pertained to fly tying. I was
really looking forward to the discussion. Thanks Paul M for a most
lucid reply... sadly, yours was the only one. All other replies
turned a viable topic into a "good-ole-boy" diatribe...a much too
frequent occurrence of late.

At the top of this note you will find a request for unsubscribing
instructions. I don't blame him. If this wasn't my list, I'd be gone.
I see two to three new subscribers daily... and the same number of
folks bailing by unsubscribing daily. Why... because the group has
become very closed and familial. Yes, over the years we've all come
to know each other but for this list to continue we must strive to
accept new members.

I don't currently have the time or energy to be the tyrant landlord
of the list. If someone would like to step up to the position please
raise your hand.

As the list currently stands, I can't envision a need for it to
continue in it's present form. So what do we do? Suggestions?

I'll start...

Biggie... refocus on fly tying/fishing.

...you guys continue the discussion...
