I have the same card, run XFree86 4.1.0, have the ati.2
drivers and xawtv from //www.linuxvideo.org/gatos/ installed
and have no problems.  here is my .xawtv config:

pixsize = 128 x 96
pixcols = 1
jpeg-quality = 75
mjpeg-quality = 50
keypad-ntsc = no
osd = yes

[defaults]
norm = ntsc
input = tuner
capture = over
color = 50%
bright = 60%

volume = 75%
