Stupid question: Why can't you use all the wonderful code in MPlayer?

Or better yet why can't all MPlayer, XINE, gstreamer, mp1e, etc, etc.. 
people get together to design a central multimedia core and have the 
individual applications only be frontends to the central library.  (I can 
think of many reasons, but I want to know what the real reasons are).

There is also a very fine video editor in hiding known as Broadcast 2000, 
and Cinelerra.  Someone should force the guys behind it to stop playing 
games and come out of hiding.  Heroine Virtual/Warrior is NOT a 
cooperation.  "We're not a guy in dorm room trying to act like a 
corporation."
