Using the "-d" option (which isn't listed in the man page or "streamer -h" output, BTW), I found out that the alsa modules I had installed (and forgotten about) were segfaulting when streamer is launched. Ripping out the alsa modules and going back to OSS works. Thanks, Gerd (both for streamer and the help).
