Hi,
Normally you can choose between mmap and read, mmap is usually the
fastest.
But with the bttv driver you don't have a choice since mmap is the only
one implemented.
I don't know how much detail you need, but using small images ofcourse
also helps a lot in processing time.
The vidcat program of the w3cam package is a relativly simple example to
get started.
Maybe not the most efficient since it is made for grabbing only one
frame,
but you will probably get it quick.
