It's referred to as the "quicktime pro tax" in many places - not that it helps to know that - many are mystified at why Apple does this

More importantly, if you are using an old version (pre-v.7) of QT Pro, the
upgrade to iTunes 5/QT 7 will warn you that your QT Pro license becomes
invalid following the upgrade.
