Here's the big thing with HD video that people forget after all those years with DV. The DV video codec is great for both shooting and editing. The only HD video codec that I've seen that works for both shooting and editing is Panasonic's DVCHD Pro. For everything else you need to convert the video to an intermediate format. I use Final Cut Pro and transcode everything to ProRes. I don't know what you'd use on Windows editors but the concept is the same - transcoding to an intermediate editing codec.
