You will of course probably not get caught but I would NOT mess with music
rights. It is definitely illegal to use music without licence ( unless it
is PD) I can not tell you how many films I have seen over the years that
had to passed on for distribution because a naive filmmaker used uncleared
music. I remember watching a bad Chinese movie years ago where a character
was listening to the radio which announced they were going to play Michael
Jackson's Thriller, luckily the character turned it off before it started.
The film was now worth picking up but had it been that would have killed
it. You students may have dodged a bullet with the performance itself, the
music licensing folks make a lot
of spot inspections for violations though mainly in bars & restaurants but
believe or not HS musical productions have been gone after on numerous
occasions.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
