We moved to an open stacks model here at Temple about a year ago. The open
stacks are shelved alphabetically by title for easy browsing, and are limited
to our feature films, TV shows, and popular documentaries in the interest of
space.

For security purposes, the open stacks consist of photocopied facsimile covers
housed in very slim "BrowserPaks" (made by Chicago One Stop) that patrons can
bring to the circulation desk to check out. Each one is marked with the call
number for easy retrieval. While the DVDs are out, we keep them alphabetized in
a section of our closed stacks.

While the implementation was something of a challenge, the results have been
overwhelmingly positive.

Thanks,
John

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
