Hi Maureen/All,

Sorry for the late response and I don't want to add any fuel to the fire, but
feel the need to comment on something more procedural.

As someone who has been responsible for cataloging what many would consider
explicit material (I will not comment on the vast and highly subjective range
of sexual and violent explicitness one encounters in film of all ratings), I
asked that an informal, internal policy be instituted that gives the employee
the choice to opt out of working with those materials they are particularly
uncomfortable with or catalog the resource by the container instead of fully
cataloging the item in hand (ie, watching the credits, etc). We have also
decided to either forego authority control or limit the number of 'added
contributors' if pseudonyms are used. Finally, if someone is fully cataloging
the materials in house, I'd recommend purchasing a monitor filter so that the
random passerby won't catch a glimpse of anything they may consider
inappropriate.

Hope this was helpful. If anyone has further questions, they can contact me off
list so that we can give this group conversation a rest.

Best Regards,

Until I read a few more emails, that is.

Glad we are giving this topic a rest.

Most folks do the best they can with the information and resources allotted to
them, even if we don’t agree.

I’d have to say I view this as a professional discussion and see no vitriol
whatsoever. Come on, we’ve got to be able to discuss controversial issues.

I did not interpret any of the language as disrespectful or bullying.

I did see someone expressing an opposite viewpoint very honestly.

Regards to all,

I'm a heretofore lurker on VIDEOLIB but must proclaim that I stand fully with
Doug and Elizabeth and find it more dismaying that their insightful comments
are being interpreted as vitriol and bullying. What part of "Please don't take
my comments personally. I am truly sorry if I offended you" is vitriolic??

You know, we're the first group to complain about censorship when it comes from
the government or the public, but heaven forbid we should recognize it in our
own actions. From my own point of view at a preeminent art school, we thrive on
challenging material. I can't imagine a library not serving in this role.

As usual, videolib provides a lively forum for discussion, and this one in
particular is fascinating. But I must say, I'm quite disturbed by the vitriolic
tone of some of the responses as well as the judging and the public bullying
that Maureen and Darby are having to endure. Am I the only one?

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
